All Rivers Flow to the Sea:
20 years of the Research on the Cultural Revolution
Abstract: In this article the author reviews his twenty years of research on the Cultural Revolution and his interactions with other scholars of the Cultural Revolution, and the state of the Cultural Revolution research by independent scholars. The author does not agree the view that “the Cultural Revolution happened in China, but the research on it happens outside of China.” The study of the Cultural Revolution has always been taking place inside China, despite the difficulty and harassment. The author also believes that the novel methods of studying the Cultural Revolution by the independent scholars, such as diverse story-telling and documentation methods and new theoretical perspectives, greatly contribute to the deepening the research on the Cultural Revolution.
