Mission: The Historical Backdrop
Abstract: Based on the personal memories of the artist, born in 1949, the oil painting “Mission" (of the series "Memories of the Oil Lamp") seeks to represent changing Sino-Soviet relations from "friends" in the 1950s to "enemies" by the late 1960s. In the backdrop, Chinese and Soviet "young pioneers" row together at Beijing's Beihai Park. In the foreground, the same Chinese children who grew into teenage “sent-down youths" are now armed and ready to fight the Soviet revisionists across China's Northeastern border.
Keywords: Sino-Soviet split, Sino-Soviet friendship, Sino-Soviet border clashes, Sent-down youth movement, Manchuria/Northeast China/Great Northern Wasteland
