Leaders and People
During Mao Zedong's rule (1949-1976), a fanatical cult of Mao was promoted and reached the highest level during the Great Cultural Revolution. People were required to show total and absolute loyalty to the leader. In this article, the author dispels the leader's cult and lays out what the author believes are the common senses in a civilized society in terms of the relationship between the leaders and the people. (1) The leaders should be loyal to the people, not vice versa; (2) The people are the ultimate force in making history, not the leaders alone; (3) Leaders are made, not born; (4) people have the right to criticize the leaders; (5) Leadership is plural, not singular; (6) Lifetime ruler and ruler-appointed heir should be banned; (7) We must stop the cult of the leader.
