Migrant Population’s Vocational Choice:
From the Perspective of Segmentation Caused by
the Household Registration System

Abstract: From the perspective of urban and rural segmentation caused by the household registration system, the migrant population is divided into three categories in this paper: rural-to- urban migrants, inhabitant migrants and urban-to-urban migrants. This paper finds that the vocational choice of urban-to-urban migrants is better than rural-to- urban migrants and inhabitant migrants. The influence on vocational choice of migrant population is different. The main factors include the basic demographic attributes and social attributes. Furthermore, Restrictions on the inhabitant migrants and urban-to-urban migrants’ employment choice are few. At the same time, the employment situation of rural-to- urban migrants in urban areas has not been improved. There is a kind of invisible threshold in the labor market to restrict the vocational choice of rural-to- urban migrants.
